Is affirmative action truly necessary?

First and foremost, I'd like to say that I am an underrepresented minority. Nevertheless, I managed to get into a prestigious university due to my SAT scores, high grades, and consistent leadership positions. I refused to identify my race or religion when applying. I was fortunate enough to attend a diverse college with young adults from all walks of life and; consequently, I have experienced some of the most enriching and thrilling experiences in these past two years. I recently attended an exchange program at a UC college, in which affirmative action has been prohibited via proposition 209. Although I enjoyed the surrounding area and vast university, I was displeased by the lack of diversity. Many of the students seemed to stick to their own, both racially and socioeconomically. This truly diminished my experience as I navigated the limited social circles with apprehension. Do you believe that there is a middle ground or alternative in regards to affirmative action in higher education, or do you view preferential treatment of any kind as discrimination? Thank you in advance.
